NEARBY PLACES
Model Railroad Museum
New Orleans - French Quarter
Shaggy's Gulf Port Beach
Cajun Fabulous Fried Chicken
Parrin’s Jambalaya Kitchen
The resort itself was not bad but if you go, I recommend a site in the front. The sewage treatment station is in the back and visible. It was loud and the smell occasionally wafted our way. At first we wondered – “What the hell are they cooking over there”, then it dawned on us. Yuck! To be fair there was some working being done and in the final days of our stay it didn’t run as often. The sites up front are level and during the rain didn’t hold water. Internet with both AT&T and T-Mobile was adequate for me to work online and stream TV.
Wolf River Resort (TLC) was the first place that we stayed for more than a week. We also had company for about 10 days during that time. Our friend Dan came to visit us. Dan is kind of a go getter so we did a lot of things that were not quite in our wheelhouse, that is, we went a lot of places that we normally would not have.
One such place was a model railroad museum and if I’m completely honest, I would have never gone there on my own. We did and I'm glad that we did. Both Denise and I had a great time there, we road the mini train through the park, and learned a lot about model trains. We were offered a special tour of the “new” museum (not yet open during our visit) where they are setting up the good stuff and were completely blown away by some of the displays.
Another adventure we took that we probably would not have if not for Dan was to go to New Orleans and visit the French Quarter, specifically Bourbon Street. Mardi Gras was still a few weeks away from it’s official start while we were there but that didn't matter, it was still crazy down there. It was so loud it hurt the dogs’ ears, but they did very well with crowds. Everyone told us not to go down there after dark, after we got back. My big takeaway was how much it did not look like NCIS New Orleans portrayal of the street.
We ate out a lot at this stay… Shaggy’s, Cajun Fabulous Fried Chicken, Parrin’s Jambalaya Kitchen, and many more. We ate at the Cajun Fabulous Fried Chicken several times. The chicken was very good, but the catfish was off the chart. The diet went out the window. Parrin’s Jambalaya Kitchen was so good and so unassuming. You really can’t judge a book by the cover. We had a meal that consisted of an order of jambalaya covered with an order of fried catfish, and then covered, again, with an order of etouffee. Denise had the jambalaya and bread pudding. We then topped it off with made to order beignets. It was my first time eating one, I want more. This is a must visit if in the area.
Our waitress was very nice as well.
We also visited a place called The Shed. It’s a Diners, Drive In’s, and Dives restaurant (I told you we ate out a lot). This place looked like a junkyard, if fact, with all three of us looking, it took us 10 minutes or more to find the door in. Once inside not much changed. The décor defined chaos theory. Every manner of things plastered to the walls and ceiling. If you go there be careful of the menu – it is not accurate and more than a little misleading. To shorten the story, Denise's drink and “special” cup ended up costing over $20, we didn't notice any mention of an additional $10 for "Dollar Store" plastic cup. The food was not bad but not really worth the drive and a bit pricy... but isn't everything these days?
The rest of our time we spent driving around to different resorts and finding hidden gems like Buccaneer State Campground. It is very close to all the beach communities, Biloxi, Gulf Shores, Pass Christian, and Bay St. Louis. We visited the beach a few times and let the dogs walk in the sand.
I would stay here again but like I mentioned – in the front section. It’s proximity to the coast opened the door to many opportunities. Dinning, shopping, and entertainment all close by. I’m not much of a casino person but there are more than a few.
