Fort Morgan on Mobile Point in Alabama
This fort was constructed at Mobile Point to defend our southern coast line and did so against two British invasions. Construction began in 1819 and took 15 to complete and took over 30 million bricks. You can read all about it here -> Fort Morgan
This was very cool. A self-guided tour that takes about an hour to walk through, unless you're a sign reader. It is pet friendly so Biscuits & Gravy joined us, which is nice because they don't read the signs.
The drive down there is nice. You feel like you're on an island, water all around you. The road is lined with houses on stilts and every color of the rainbow. I've never been to Jamacia, but this is how I imagine it.
I was amazed at how wet everything is. All the rooms are like being in a cave, in fact there are stalagmites and stalactites forming in most of them. Not very big, but hey, they were there.
Another thing I found interesting is that they had 12 inch guns that fired a 1046 pound round eight and a half miles. Compare that to the USS Alabama's 16 inch guns. Not bad for 1898.
The other day on NCIS New Orleans they shot one of the scenes inside the fort. Denise and were watching and both looked at each other - "Is that?, Yes it is. We were there! Its amazing how the older you get - it takes less and less to excite you.
This was an interesting place to visit. I do wish we had better planned it, it was kind of a "Hey, let's go out there" adventure. It would be a nice place for a picnic.
