Perry - Rock City

What can I say about this RV park? There were several things about it that ticked our "nice" boxes as well as several that didn't. Downtown Perry was nice, several shops and restaurants all nearby. Complementary breakfast on Saturday morning, food trucks in parking lot, and quiet. The laundry room was huge, at least 10 washers and driers - and clean. Large pond with catch and release (no license needed).

The park is located in northern Georgia which is very hilly. I'd say mountainous but I lived in Colorado - so not! The terrain meant that you were either going uphill or down and the park was no different. It was laid out in tiers so our view of the neighbors to the front was basically axels and a retaining wall.

There were only a handful of sites that had grass and ours was not one of those. The area for our outdoor mats was so rocky that Denise bruised the bottom of her foot through the mat. I get the thought here - gravel is cheaper to maintain than grass, no mowing. However, with no grass, when the rain comes (Beatle lyric) there is no drainage so the water runs where it will - did I mention it was very hilly. It was like "white water rafting" for the local squirrel population.

RANT: RV Parks are adopting a policy whereby if you want site 54, you have to pay a fee ($15 - $25) to lock the site in. If you don't, they can move you to another site any time up to your check-in, which they did to us because we didn't pay the extra. So, if you're like us and tour the sites for future reference - you may want to consider this option.

The park seemed decently maintained but all the gravel made it look messy. The long term sections were away from the "passing through" people - I just wish the parks would enforce some kind of appearance code. Some of them really detract from the overall aesthetics. Near our house there lived a man of whom it was said - "if it had a wheel on it, he had one in his yard". It was not a nostalgic moment.

The pond was nice and there were many benches placed around so you could enjoy it along with the ducks and other creatures. We notice this terrapin lurking the grass, we named him Timmy. This image does not do it justice, he was probably 16 inches in diameter. There was a fence between us so didn't have to worry about the dogs getting chomped. Also, they didn't even care about it, but don't let a squirrel come within 50 feet.

As we write these reviews I'm starting to see an unintentional rating system being  developed - basically, how long would we stay knowing what we know.

The park itself was clean and well kept. Sites were adequately sized and mostly level. They have a club house but did not see anything  scheduled while we were there aside from Saturday breakfast and bingo. The surrounding area was nice, not too busy but still had everything we needed.

    Our Takeaway

This is one of those parks that, for us, was a good place to stop but not for more than a night or two. To be honest, my major aversion to this park was the lack of grass on the sites. It was very hard on the dogs to either walk on hot asphalt or sharp rocks. Loved downtown Perry. The Dogwood Festival was fun, lots of vendors. The people of Perry were very friendly - Denise was approached by one vendor who asked us to watch her booth while she heeded nature's call. Left the cashbox open and walked away. I was both shocked and pleased...
